Google Faces New Challenges, Post-Armstrong

Google

The departure of Tim Armstrong for AOL presents new challenges for Google, The Wall Street Journal reports, especially as the search giant tries to win new business from big brand advertisers. Armstrong, the former SVP of advertising sales, had a reputation for building strong relationships with big clients, who now have the option of buying graphical and video ads across Google’s properties and even on TV shows where Google acts as an advertising broker. Of course, these new businesses represent just a tiny fraction of Google’s revenues, and some, like Group M Interaction CEO Rob Norman, think they will struggle to grow without Armstrong, who forged a great working relationship with the company’s big clients.

In response to last week’s announcement from Time Warner that Armstrong would join AOL as its new chairman and CEO, Google said it would turn to an existing Google exec to replace him. An announcement is expected in the next several weeks; according to insiders, Sukhinder Singh Cassidy, Google’s president for Asia-Pacific and Latin America operations, heads that list.

Whoever the successor is will face the substantial task of trying to draw more business from large brand marketers at a time when their budgets are shrinking. Drawing more money from the largest advertisers is a continuing challenge for Google, which became the Web’s largest company thanks to hundreds of thousands of small to midsize advertisers buying search engine advertising. Now that the company is expanding into areas that are less attractive to smaller advertisers, it must target larger marketers instead. The weak economic climate will make this a particularly difficult task for whoever assumes Armstrong’s position.

Business tourism helps capital to avoid trade downturn

Uncategorized Comments Off

ABU DHABI // The capital’s tourism sector has been synonymous with business travel, but tourism officials say they intend to make pleasure travel a more important the sector in coming years.

bilde
Business tourism, one of the most resilient sectors of the economy, has protected Abu Dhabi from the economic downturn. But tourism officials say the addition of travel for pleasure would boost the local economy even further.

“The majority of travel that happens in Abu Dhabi is either business travel or expats living here that want to go home a couple of times every year, and outbound tourism is the bulk of travel agencies’ business here,” said Hani Khorsheed, the secretary general of the Abu Dhabi Agencies Committee.

“The reason why our business has not been affected by the economic crisis is because there is no tourism here yet.”
Abu Dhabi will host Business Tourism Week in March, incorporating the Gulf Meetings and Events Conference, the Gulf Incentive, Business Travel and Meetings Exhibition, and an event organised by the Society of Incentive Travel Executives. More than 250 exhibitors are expected.
Mubarak al Muhairi, the director general of the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, (ADTA) said improving business tourism was one of the authority’s major tasks, but it was also planning to build the leisure sector.

Mr al Muhairi said the authority would reach its 2012 target of 2.7 million hotel guests a year by aiming for “discerning tourists who have a keen interest in heritage and culture”.

Saadiyat Island, scheduled to open in 2018, has been touted as the main attraction for what the Abu Dhabi Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC) calls .

Rita Aoun-Abdo, the art and culture advisor at the TDIC, said Saadiyat Island would distinguish Abu Dhabi from Dubai and other GCC countries. “We’re using art and culture as a catalyst to position Abu Dhabi locally and internationally,” Ms Aoun-Abdo said.
Antonia Carver, the editor of Bidoun, a Middle East arts and culture magazine, said Abu Dhabi had high hopes for cultural tourism, even though it was “starting from zero”.

“In the Gulf, it’s a new idea to go to an art museum. They’re thinking of putting in a museum before they’ve thought about an arts school and this is totally unusual,” Ms Carver said.

“But there’s also big, new middle-class tourism nations, like India, and bringing them here might be a real possibility.”

Bassem Kudsi, a spokesman for the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (Adach), said as long as the emirate had something truly unique to offer, the tourists should come.

“We have the geography, things like Sir Bani Yas Island,” Mr Kudsi said. “We have the camel festival, the sand dunes. With other events we’re targeting European travellers, like the Abu Dhabi Classics programme. It takes time but we are starting to build a critical mass.”
ADTA was working on other ways to attract more leisure tourists, with plans to expand overseas promotion, through 17 exhibitions, three more than last year, in 11 countries.

It will have promotions at the China Incentive Business Travel and Meetings Exhibition, the China International Travel Market, and other exhibitions in Italy.

The Web Hosting Money Back Guarantee

Uncategorized Comments Off

A majority of web hosting companies would offer a money back guarantee for a certain time period of using their services. The main reason that web hosts emphasize this offer, is that it is a time tested and proven marketing strategy as customers are convinced that their money is safe and can be refunded if they are not satisfied by the hosting services. The money back guarantee is incorporated as an effective marketing strategy and in most cases it enhances the assurance quotients among potential users and thereby more sign ups are generated.

Since the industry has become fiercely competitive and there are many fly-by-night hosting companies out there, people would only want to invest in something that is reliable and backed by a “guarantee”. The term “guarantee” therefore abates the risk factor to a certain extent, thereby creating a “risk reversal” and people don’t find themselves holding back to buy something that comes with a guarantee.

The “no questions asked money back guarantee” in fact speaks volumes about the nature of services and hosting tools offered by the company. It also reflects that a company is confident about its strengths quality of services it has to offer to its discerning customers. Most customers would be confident about their decision to sign up with such companies as the risk factor is almost minimal. Furthermore, a discerning customer would always dig a bit more into the reliability of the hosting company through other sources before he pays up for a hosting a account.

The above notwithstanding, signing up for a web hosting company that offers a money back guarantee is highly recommended. However, these claims have to be confirmed and substantiated by making a few inquiries about the reliability and credibility of the host. Look for user reviews, ratings as well as negative reviews to get a fair understanding of the company’s policies and whether it really values its customers or not. Only then should you actually believe in the money back guarantee that they have to offer. Most importantly, it is advisable to read the fine print of their terms and conditions and Service Agreement thoroughly as that may contain certain lacunae that could conflict with the guarantee offered by the company. Moreover, this would also give you a better understanding of the company’s policies. Perform a thorough research on the hosting company and you would eventually be in good stead to make a wise and well informed decision.

In summer your organism!

Uncategorized Comments Off

Hot days!

How nice it is to be suntanned, dynamic and free to do everything we want! For most of us summer is the time when we can approach this dream. We use every possibility to lie in the sun and to strengthen our immune system. If our ?northern sun? isn’t enough for us, if it can’t pamper us with hot days we decide to have a trip to warm beaches — we hope that there we’ll manage to reach our fiery red friend and we’ll let it gild our white sun wishful bodies.

As compared to everyday life sunbathing presupposes a long stay in the sun and ultra-violet rays impact. The first circumstance attracts our attention to the amount and to the quality of liquid we drink. During this period you should drink water, and the amounts should be much bigger than usually. There is no other liquid that participates in water-salt exchange. If a drink has some color and taste, we initiate the mechanism of digestion. This means that we don’t drink juices, tonics, etc ? we eat them. And only pure water can compensate the loss of moisture that occurs through our skin when we thoroughly sunbathe. 2—3 liters of good water (non-chlorinated, fresh and without gas) is a necessary minimum. You may drink more, but never less. And remember: there is no better way of cleaning your organism! It’s also useful to take 2—3 grains of salt and suck them after having a glass of water. Then the water will get some time to stay in the organism and to ?fill with water? your skin, hair, nails, joints and other tissues where metabolism process passes slowly. It provides your organism with formation of melanin pigment (which gives your skin a golden-brown shadow) and strengthens your immune system. But at the same time it provokes the formation of free radicals. These substances damage ?Healthy? molecules and turn them into ?aggressors?, that continue the damaging action and affect the work of ferments, hormones and other members of metabolism. Damaged proteins are alien to our body. they bring to strained work of immune system and to overloads of excretive systems (first of all of kidneys and liver). So, if you decide to spend all day in the sun you have to try and save your organism from any other processed that overload the defensive and excretive functions of your organism.

So:

  • Try to eat only natural healthy products. Avoid any kind of food chemistry. If you sunbathe exclude tonics, fizzy drinks, tinned food, ketchup, mayonnaise, chewing gum from your ration. Forget about desserts that contain any kind of conservatives (color, taste, stabilizers, etc). All this can be called harmful food. Give preference to water, fruits, use vegetable oils, lemon and grape juice with your salads.
  • The main load for metabolic and excretive functions of an organism are animal proteins. While sunbathing you should limit the consumption of animal proteins. I during your holiday you want to follow the rules of healthy nutrition, eat meat or fish once a day and only in the evening. In summer eat more fish and sea-food than meat. As a garnish take green salad rather than spaghetti, rice or potatoes. Cottage cheese, all other kinds of cheese, yogurt and eggs are preferable to be eaten in the morning. A breakfast containing sour milk products shouldn’t be more often than twice or thrice a week, and have egg-breakfast only once a week. It’s especially useful to have fasting days once or twice a week ? on such days you may have only vegetables, fruits, nuts and cereals. Healthy nutrition will help you avoid weight gaining during your holiday.
  • In summer your organism uses less power on warming than in winter. Therefore our main food in summer are fresh vegetables and fruits, whereas during the rest of the year we recommend having long-term carbohydrates (cereals and bread) in the first part of the day (for breakfast or for lunch). An ideal breakfast would be salad with a small loaf of bread, and for your midday meal choose some potatoes, rice or pasta with steamed, grilled or fresh vegetables. For your snack have some fruit with nuts. Try not to have fruits after 18.00 pm ? if you don’t follow this recommendation, they will provoke fermentation in your stomach and your favorite dress will fit you badly in the evening… By the way, swelling stomach means that there is a disbalance of stomach flora. Treating such problems is necessary and usually very long. The dieticians of our Clinic know the best ways to cope with it.
  • Avoid eating the same product every day. Only food diversification can provide with all needed nutrition elements and at the same time it won’t overload digestion and won’t cause trouble for cleaning your organism.
  • Be careful with alcohol. Avoid them during the day and don’t drink much in the evening. We decided to give our organism a possibility to cope with the consequence of ?free-radical boom?, so let your liver and kidneys work for your health and beauty.

If you follow these simple recommendations, you will come back from your holiday not only with a beautiful color of your skin, but also full of energy to continue your work.

tour in Walt Disney World

Disney to close Space Mountain for much of 2009 for upgrades.

One of the more iconic attractions at Walt Disney World is getting a makeover.

Disney said Wednesday it will shut down Space Mountain this spring for what the company described as a months-long “refreshment” of the 34-year-old Magic Kingdom roller coaster.

The ride will close April 19, just after the Easter holiday. It is expected to reopen late in the year, Disney spokeswoman Andrea Finger said, though a specific reopening date has not been set.

The timetable means Space Mountain will be closed throughout the busy summer-travel season.

The construction work will include installing new track inside the enclosed coaster, which carries guests in the dark through a series of sudden drops and sharp turns. The layout of the track will remain the same, however.

Other upgrades will include a new enclosure for the ride’s queuing area and a new ceiling inside its signature, white dome, Finger said.

Finger said the renovations are the first substantial work on the ride since September 1999. The project follows a series of other makeovers Disney has made in recent years to some of its oldest attractions, including the Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean in the Magic Kingdom and Spaceship Earth in Epcot.

Disney fans have been swapping rumors for more than a year that the company was planning a sweeping overhaul of Space Mountain. In 2005, the Walt Disney Co. completed an extensive, two-year makeover of the Space Mountain at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif.

But the changes to Orlando’s version of the ride — it’s the original Space Mountain, having opened Jan. 15, 1975 — are likely to be more modest.

“We’re retaining many of the classic elements that made Space Mountain a right of passage at the Magic Kingdom that’s been enjoyed by generations,” Finger said.

World Leaders Wary of U.S. Economic Measures

Uncategorized Comments Off

DAVOS, Switzerland — This was supposed to be the year the United States came in from the cold at the annual gathering of world leaders here. But instead of receiving a warm embrace, American policies were rebuked again and again in rhetoric that recalled the anger of the Bush years — mainly aimed at what the world views as the new threat of protectionism by the United States.

Certainly, there is a deep reservoir of good will for President Obama and the change in direction he represents. But despite the pledges to encourage international trade and economic cooperation that accompanied the closing sessions of the gathering, the World Economic Forum, on Sunday, there were clear signs that deep divisions between the United States and the rest of the world remained.02global

“There is such a level of concern, despair and anxiety that as welcome as the new president is, no one is inclined to cut the U.S. much slack,” said Richard Haas, president of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Or as Niall Ferguson, the Harvard historian, put it, “If G.M. got a new C.E.O., does that mean people would suddenly want to buy their cars?”

The criticism came from the usual sources, like Prime Minister Vladimir V. Putin of Russia and Premier Wen Jiabao of China, who both criticized a long pattern of excessive consumption, risky borrowing and inadequate regulation in the United States.

But more significant, the brickbats also came from economic and political leaders of European allies like Germany and France……………..

Whether the issue was the recent bailout for the American auto industry or proposals favoring American steel producers in the stimulus package now being debated on Capitol Hill, foreign officials warned that any move toward protectionism would have serious consequences for Washington and the rest of the world.

“We must not allow market forces to be completely distorted,” Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, warned in a speech on Wednesday. “For instance, I am very wary of seeing subsidies injected into the U.S. auto industry. That could lead to distortion and protectionism.”

By the weekend, as word of the “Buy American” provision in the stimulus package to help the United States steel industry spread through Davos, the tone had become sharper.

“It’s extremely preoccupying that one of the first acts of the new Obama administration could be a measure that is clearly protectionist and a distortion of competition,” said Anne-Marie Idrac, the French trade minister, who tried to draw Pascal Lamy, director general of the World Trade Organization, into the battle.

Mr. Lamy, however, said the organization would only act if there has been a “breach of the rules.” “I am not that big cop,” he added.

For all the global affection for Mr. Obama, Washington sent a relatively low-profile contingent to Davos, with Valerie Jarrett, a White House adviser, serving as the administration’s headliner here.

Ms. Jarrett did not address the issue of protectionism directly in her brief speech on Thursday, preferring to stick with the big picture as well as Mr. Obama’s connection to Chicago, her hometown.

Instead, the task of defending American economic policy fell to attendees like Representative Brian Baird, a Democrat from Washington State, who has served in Congress for the last decade.

“The steel issue is vastly overplayed here,” he said. “Even Adam Smith himself said certain key industries deserved to have protection.”

Noting that his district is home to two steel plants — down from three a few years ago — he added, “Steel is one of those industries.”

He suggested that this was not the time to push free-trade dogma on American taxpayers already worried about surging levels of unemployment.

“If you want to kill the W.T.O., that would be the way to do it,” he said.

Davos has always stood for globalization, and the benefits of free trade are an article of faith here. But even Davos die-hards concede that national economic interests have come to the fore amid the global downturn, and voter support for easing trade barriers is at low ebb.

To be sure, for all the foreign criticism over the help for the Detroit automakers, European countries including France, Britain and Sweden have offered up billions in aid for local auto manufacturers. What’s more, France has long protected the French companies it calls “national champions” from the threat of foreign takeover while providing huge subsidies for its farmers.

But beyond the public sparring, many foreign officials are also concerned about how the United States government will pay for Mr. Obama’s proposed stimulus package, which could ultimately cost $1 trillion.

A binge of new borrowing by Washington could effectively crowd out other borrowers by pushing interest rates higher over the long term, and would be especially painful for developing countries that rely on foreign capital. Or, it could stoke inflation when the global economy eventually begins to recover.

Ernesto Zedillo, the former president of Mexico who helped steer his country through a financial crisis in 1994, said developing countries were already having a hard time finding the capital they needed without competing with increased borrowing by the United States. And his country does not have the option of printing money, he said, because the Mexican peso is not a reserve currency like .

Even the praise for Mr. Obama from other leaders was balanced by criticism of Mr. Bush and past United States policies. “He seems to be very keen to interact with other nations as equals, rather than talking down,” said Kgalema Motlanthe, the president of South Africa. “It is a breath of fresh air.”

But for all the complaining from abroad, no other economic power — not Europe, not Japan and not China — seems ready to step up and fill the role traditionally played by the United States.

“The irony of the situation,” said Mr. Haas, of the Council on Foreign Relations, “is that everyone is still looking to the U.S. for leadership to fix things or at least make things better.”

A Focus on Horses Keeps a Daily Paper From Online Anxiety

Uncategorized Comments Off

The newspaper industry is reeling and trying to adapt to an online future.

But The Daily Racing Form, the horse-racing tabloid with the familiar red, white and black logo, appears to have found a survival strategy: it feeds its readers a product with news, analysis and data, and sells them more and deeper analytic information from its Web site, drf.com.

“Initially, the Internet was a small part of the company, but now I’d say that it’s 10 to 20 percent,” said Steven Crist, The Form’s chairman and publisher. “We’re not going to be selling more hard-copy newspapers in five years. I think we’ll still be selling them, because there are still thousands of people who are tactile and sensual about their newsprint and Flair pens and marking up their Form. I don’t think we’re going digital any time soon.”

In a few years, he expects the digital side to account for at least one-third of revenue.

The Form’s business model is bucking two economic trends: it is a daily in the midst of a recession that has decimated advertising and some general-interest papers. And it is a niche paper that serves a sport with considerable problems, but one that comes alive to a general audience for Triple Crown events like Saturday’s Belmont Stakes.

Still, it is the industry’s only daily, with its competition largely from The BloodHorse and The Thoroughbred Times’s Web sites, and the industry’s central data source, Equibase. A formidable challenge seemed to come in 1991, when Robert Maxwell started The Racing Times, which Crist edited. But it lasted less than a year, and The Form acquired some of its assets to kill it.

“Oh, The Racing Form is the bible,” said William Nack, the former Sports Illustrated horse-racing writer and a biographer of Ruffian and Secretariat who grew up admiring The Form’s top columnist, Charlie Hatton. “You can’t be without it at the track.”

Crist said that The Form’s unusual economics helped it endure the recession. He said that fewer than 10 people had been laid off this year, on a staff of about 200.

“Newspapers for the most part get 95 percent of our revenue from advertising, and circulation is break even, at best,” Crist said Friday at Belmont Park. “We’re 90-percent-plus from circulation. So the advertising fall hasn’t hurt much. I’m not saying we don’t like or need advertising, but we’re the most expensive newspaper in the world, at $5 or $6, and that’s where our money comes from.”

Circulation averages nearly 33,000 daily, said Jim Kostas, The Form’s president and general manager. Less than 20 years ago, it was closer to 100,000.

“Although it suffers from some of the same issues newspapers do, the combination of its editorial content and data puts it on firmer ground,” said Charles Hayward, the president of the New York Racing Association and a former president of The Form. “It’s like combining The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times.”

Although its circulation is modest, the $5 to $6 price tag, depending on the market, means revenue of at least $60 million from selling 39 regional editions of the paper at tracks (where The Form also publishes programs) and newsstands. Some days, just a few thousand copies are sold; on Triple Crown days, 350,000.

“Absolutely, we’re profitable,” Crist said. “It’s not even close. We turn over a lot of cash.” The Form is privately owned by a venture-capital firm, Arlington Capital Partners of Chevy Chase, Md., so there is no independent verification of Crist’s profitability claims.

But at least through its most recent sales, it has proved to be an increasingly valuable news-media property: in 1998, a group that included Crist acquired it for $44 million; six years later, the Wicks Group bought it for about $75 million. In 2007, before the recession struck, Arlington paid nearly $200 million as part of a strategy to sell premium sports data online.

“We know that that can’t go on forever,” Crist said of the rise in acquisition prices.

The Internet strategy has been building for a decade and focuses on selling charts, past-performance data, handicapping reports and products like Andrew Beyer’s speed figures for a few dollars to a few hundred dollars. “We’re constantly playing with pricing plans,” Crist said.

Marc Attenberg, The Form’s vice president for Internet, said, “We benefit because people are willing to pay for our information.” Perhaps The Form’s model is one that newspapers should have heeded instead of offering free content. But The Form may be different because what it offers is highly specialized and geared to gamblers, not general-interest readers.

Attenberg hopes that the next evolution in The Form’s digital growth is the creation of mobile devices that can accommodate the intricacy and depth of performance charts.

“Eighty-five percent of people come to our site, print out what they want and take it to the track or to their living room,” he said. “Right now, our stuff just doesn’t work on a BlackBerry.”

What’s the Difference Between Van and Car Insurance?

What’s the Difference Between Van and Car Insurance?

Author: MarkeD

When it comes to auto insurance, many companies are starting to advertise separate policies for vans and cars. Surprisingly, van insurance differs quite significantly to car insurance despite the similarities in vehicles, and when searching for insurance it is important to be aware of the differences between the two.

There are typically three types of van insurance to choose from, ranging from third party, third party fire and theft, and fully comprehensive. Third party covers you if another party makes a claim against you after an accident and is the cheapest form of insurance. Subsequently, third party fire and theft covers the above, as well as if your van is damaged by fire or stolen. Fully comprehensive, expectedly, covers you for everything else also, including if you have a collision with a driver who has no insurance at all.

It is widely acknowledged that many vehicles can quite easily seem to be classified as either a van or a car, therefore to be sure that your van fits into the category of ‘van insurance’ there are many things to consider. Firstly, a van is a true “van” if it carries less than four people including the driver. Also, according to its specification, a van must be designed to carry goods, and must also weigh under three and a half tonnes.

It is also common for most insurance companies to refuse van insurance to drivers who are under the age of 21, this is simply due to the higher risk of crashing attributed to younger drivers. Most companies do not include cover of tools and other accessories that may be stolen from a van. It is advised, therefore, that drivers take out an additional policy to cover any items that are frequently left in their vehicle.

When buying van or car insurance it is also important to be aware of the need to declare exactly how you are going to use it and for how long for. Usually, vans that are going to be driven full time will mean a higher insurance premium. Also, van insurers today are more and more likely to give you a better deal if you are prepared to install additional safety or security devices. Adding such accessories lessen the chance that you should need to make a claim, and thus should save you money and make the inconvenience less likely to happen in the first place.
